Frequently Asked Questions

We get asked lots of questions about SelectaDNA - what is it, does it harm me, will it ruin my product... so to put your mind at ease, we've come up with all the answers and put them here.  If you still can't find what you are looking for, please just give us a call on 0508 DNA DNA.

What is SelectaDNA?

SelectaDNA is an invisible solution featuring a unique synthetic DNA Sequence.  It can be used to mark property or offenders in domestic or commercial situations.

How does it work?

SelectaDNA Works by invisibly marking property or commercial premises with a unique synthetic profile.  The solution glows bright blue when placed under UV lights.  Each bottle of solution is unique in its makeup.  Once the bottle is registered with the SelectaDNA database, ownership of goods can be verified.

Where can it be used?

SelectaDNA can be used to protect valuable items in the home, such as jewellery, electronics, memorabilia and clothing, on vehicles and in commercial premises.

How does the commercial kit work?

The Commercial Property Marking Kit works in exactly the same way as the Domestic Kit.  Commercial kits come in 3 different sizes - small, medium and large.  This means that we have a kit that can cater for small businesses right through to large corporates.

SelectaDNA is also available in a HydraSpray for commercial premises.  These units are covertly placed at the entrance and exit of a property.  In a robbery scenario the spray is activated and the suspect covered with the SelectaDNA solution as they leave the scene of the crime.

As with the Domestic Kits, warning stickers are placed in highly visible areas to let prospective criminals know the property is protected by SelectaDNA.

Commercial Kits and HydraSpray Units are available direct from SelectaDNA.

Is it safe?

Yes.  SelectaDNA is a non-toxic, water-based synthetic product.

How long does SelectaDNA last?

SelectaDNA has been known to last indefinately on valuables, on offenders' skin for between one to two weeks and on clothes for up to 6 months.

How can the DNA be identified?

The DNA solution in the Domestic Kits also contains microdots with a unique code. The mirodots can be examined under a microscope and the code matched to the corresponding code in the database - providing immediate proof of ownershp.

Is there evidence SelectaDNA reduces crime?

Yes - Police backed trials of the SelectaDNA strategy in the UK and Netherlands have resulted in major crime reductions.  In a recent pilot in the London area of East Dulwich, the number of burglaries fell by 55% in four months after SelectaDNA was deployed in 1000 homes.  In Torbay, England, a three month trial of 450 homes saw the number of recorded burglaries in the area drop by 70% after SelectaDNA was implemented.

In the Netherlands, SelectaDNA Domestic kits were provided to 2500 homes in Amersfoort, a high crime area.  Following implementation the incidence of burglaries fell by 40% in the period January to April 2009 compared to the same period the previous year.

Why is SelectaDNA successful?

SelectaDNA works as a deterrant for burglars and thieves.  Once the criminal fraternity becomes aware of the effectiveness of SelectaDNA in placing them at the scene of a crime or tracking stolen goods, properties displaying SelectaDNA warning signs become a "No Go Zone" for burglars.

What is included in the Domestic Kit?

Each Domestic Kit contains a 30ml bottle of solution, one foam applicator, a  UV Light and a set of bright branded stickers to be strategically placed in windows and on the marked property to let criminals know that items in the house are marked with SelectaDNA.

How many applications will one kit supply?

Domestic Kits can mark up to 50 - 100 items.  The various Commercial Kits range from 200 - 1000 items.
